Going to the Supermarket

Before class please watch both videos and answer the questions.

  1. How did you feel about this British supermarket?
  2. What was surprising about Sainsbury's for you?
  3. Would you like to go shopping there?
  4.  What are the differences between British supermarkets and Japanese ones?
  5. In the second video, what was interesting for you?
  6. What changes could you see in the video?
  7. From the video, what has not changed in Britain?

Up until 1999, when I came to Japan, I shopped at Sainsbury's. But I was surprised by the first video, there have been a lot of changes. But when I was growing up, my mother shopped at a lot of different small shops: butchers 肉屋, greengrocers やお屋の店 and chemists 薬局. Each had its own atmosphere and individuality. Before class think about a shop you remember from your childhood and prepare to tell the class about it.

Disappearing Telephone Boxes

In 1999 I came to Kyoto. At that time there were many telephone boxes around the town, but gradually there have been disappearing. Recently, except for at the station, not many can be seen. But yesterday on a narrow quiet street I found one. Who uses this telephone box? Usually people use cell phones, so I do not think this phone box is needed. But when I saw this telephone box, nostalgically I wanted to call someone.

  1. How often do you use a public telephone?
  2. Do we need public telephones?
  3. How useful is your cell phone for you?

  • What do you think about this new business?
  • Would you buy coffee here?
  • Do you like traditional British telephone boxes?

Before the class think of something that has disappeared from Kyoto. It could be a building, a shop or anything. But something that you are nostalgic about.  Prepare a small talk about it, to give to the class.

Lancaster Castle

Lancaster Castle is over 800 years old and is built on the site of an even older Roman castle. It has a long and sometimes dark history.  Within the building there is longest continuously running law court in Britain (裁判所) and until recently the longest running prison (刑務所).  If you travel to Lancaster, the castle is a great place to visit, but the atmosphere (雰囲気) inside can feel a little scary.

The law court has two historically famous trials (裁判).  In 1612 ten women and two men were found guilty of witchcraft (魔女の事)and executed (死刑執行した).  They were called the Pendle witches, because they lived in the Pendle area of Lancashire.  More recently in 1975, six Irish men were wrongly accused of terrorism. In1974 two pubs in Birmingham were bombed by the IRA (アイルランド共和国軍), the real bombers were never found. But the six innocent men (無罪の男の人)were sent to prison. So Lancaster Castle has a very dark history.

  1. When you watched the video, how did you feel about the castle?
  2. After reading about the castle, what did you think about the castle?
  3. What questions do you have about the castle?
  4. Would you like to visit the castle? Why or why not?
  5. Do you enjoy visiting historical places?
Before the class please think of a building that you would like to tell the class about. Prepare to talk for about five minutes about that building. After your classmates will ask questions.
